Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) is a smart antenna technology for wireless communications in which multiple antennas are used at both the source (transmitter) and the destination (receiver). The information received by the antennas at each end of the communications circuit is combined to minimize errors and optimize data speed.

MIMO technology is the most recent building block innovation relevant to the wireless communications arena, offering a significant increase in data throughput and link range without additional bandwidth or transmit power. This is achieved by higher spectral efficiency by transmitting multiple information streams in the same frequency band at the same time.

Transmission and reception of information at the same time and in the same frequency band adds additional performance requirements to the antenna. The ability of the antennas to detect statistically different information can be limited if not properly designed. When choosing a provider, look for extensive experience designing MIMO antenna systems for cellular and Wi-Fi networks.
